Swine Flu – Facts
By Eric K Kampel

Swine influenza – Swine influenza or swine flu is a respiratory disease in pigs caused by the type A H1N1 swine influenza virus (SIV). Humans in close proximity to swine could contract swine influenza if the swine are carrying the rare strain of the SIV that is capable of affecting humans.

Symptoms – Swine flu symptoms in humans are generally similar to regular flu (influenza) symptoms and include muscle pain, runny nose, sore throat, cough, headache, lack of appetite, fever, chills, and general weakness and discomfort. Other reported symptoms are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Transmission – H1N1 flu spreads from pigs to humans when humans are close to infected pigs. People working in barns or visiting livestock exhibits housing infected pigs are likely to get affected. Transmission from humans to humans can occur when the infected individual coughs or sneezes when others are close by. Putting one’s hands to the nose or mouth after touching anything with the flu viruses on it could also spread the infection. Consuming well-cooked pork and pork products won’t cause infection as cooking to an internal temperature of 160°F kills bacteria and viruses, including the swine flu virus.

Treatment and medication – While swine flu can generally be cured by the four antiviral drugs approved for curing flu in the US, amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir, the recent 2009 swine flu outbreak viruses have been found to be resistant to the first two drugs. Oseltamivir and zanamivir are now recommended for treatment and prevention of swine influenza.

Prevention – Swine flu can be prevented by taking certain precautionary measures, such as washing hands frequently with soap or an alcohol-based hand wash. Staying away from infected individuals is important as their coughing or sneezing could spread the infection. If instances of infection are reported in your locality, stay indoors as far as possible. Swine flue vaccine could be out by June 2009.

Yoga is “preventative medicine” for children and adults. Yet the world does not embrace preventative action. Just look at hunger, global warming, health care, and poverty. Now you see that some people do take action, but many do not.

Educating the public about the many benefits, which children experience from Yoga practice, is a full-time job for some Yoga teachers. Although most of the public thinks of Yoga postures as a “mild” form of exercise; there are many more different aspects to Yoga practice.

Yoga is a complete holistic approach to health. Yoga teaches proper breathing, dieting, exercise, meditation, relaxation techniques, and many more natural solutions to health problems.

Yoga and Ayurvedic medicine have dieting practices based upon a person’s constitution or dosha. This same classification can be made for exercise routines. An Ayurvedic doctor will, most likely, recommend specific exercises based upon a patient’s dosha.

The entire approach of Yoga and Ayurveda is based upon preventative measures. There are also solutions for “damage control,” when a person has an existing ailment, but any doctor can agree that many of today’s health problems are preventable.

Let’s look at global obesity. The public is very tired of hearing about obesity. Your spam filters are working overtime to pull all of the “Instant weight loss” methods out of your Email box. If you read through the spam, you will notice that spammers want to sell you pills, not permanent solutions to obesity. The spammer’s approach is to make quick money off the public.

When the majority of our population refuses to exercise, the easy money is in selling pills, instant weight loss, and “snake oil.” There is a solution, but most of us will not like it. Yogic diets are full of fruit, vegetables, and natural food. Even in India, it can be observed that diabetes is on the rise, when people eat “junk food.”

As the Indian economy has improved, so has the “middle class appetite” for processed food. This runs parallel to western social and economic patterns.

What does this have to do with Yoga for kids? Yoga is a lifestyle and the earlier you expose children to good health habits, the better your child’s health will be.

As parents, we have many choices, but establishing good health habits, within our children, is an obligation. We also have to eat properly, and exercise, with our children. If you cannot go to a Yoga class, you can always take your child out for a walk. Parents are role models, and any child will copy the image, which you create for him or her.

Yoga classes for children are a parent’s gift of good health. Yoga gives kids a better chance to develop good habits, handle stress, find natural solutions to good health, and live a quality life.

Get up… take the kids to school… Starbucks venti skinny vanilla latte triple shot… go to work… first bite to eat at Noon… five-thirty… pick up kids… McDonald’s fly by… drop one off at soccer practice… drop one off at football… back to pick up first from soccer… pick up second from football… home by 8:30… help kids with homework… snack… tuck kids in bed… collapse… oh – and who was that strange man in my bed I call my husband?

Sound familiar?

Today’s society places great importance on how involved our kids are in sports and activities. Our children are so overscheduled now that families are completely torn apart. Mom is on one side of town watching one kid’s game while Dad is at the other’s. And if you have three, forget it! Fast food is the norm and the parents and kids are exhausted and disconnected.

Reasoning for such aggressive schedules is typically quite honorable, “I want my children to have the opportunities I didn’t have.”… “Sports teach discipline, hard work, and team work.”… “They make great friends through their activities, friends they’ll have for life.” These are statements from parents who love their children and truly want the best for them. However, what is often overlooked is that the downside of heavy involvement in sports and other extracurricular activities may greatly outweigh the upside. Parents know they’re tired, they know the kids are cranky, they know their marriage is lifeless, but due to today’s societal pressures it would be considered cruel and unusual punishment to even consider cutting back on this crazy lifestyle and deprive their children. Friends will look down upon them and the children surely won’t do as well as their peers who have spent countless hours on the soccer field and even more going through drive-thru’s.

It has gotten so out of hand that one news reporter didn’t even catch the hypocrisy when he said in one breath that “obesity in children is at an all time high” and then stated, “Sports involvement is also at an all time high which is a great way to battle the obesity epidemic.” Is it too far of a stretch to believe that maybe one is actually responsible for the other? If we know that 80% of health is related to eating habits, and these kids’ eating habits border on horrific, then wouldn’t it be a logical conclusion that this crazy lifestyle may actually be causing obesity in kids? It’s certainly something to consider.

But even beyond the obesity debate, there’s the problem of the disconnected family. Most children today live in some sort of a split-parenting lifestyle due to the extremely high rate of divorce. So these kids are being shuffled from house to house and then shuffled even more when they are at those houses. The new definition of “family” is fuzzy at best and we exacerbate this when we split up the newly blended family (2nd or 3rd marriage) with everyone going in different directions.

While the kids have structure they have little down time just to be a kid and develop their wonderful ability to be imaginative. When they’re not scheduled for something they often don’t know what to do. The have little sense of family and what is truly important in life (family, love, relationships) as winning a game can be more important than visiting with grandparents not seen for six months. And they are learning that what should be the most important relationship in the family (between Mom and Dad) comes last on the list of priorities. And we wonder why the divorce rate is so high! On top of all that, how close can a parent really be with their child when they are watching them, not engaged with them. When there is no time to have deep conversations, they won’t happen.

So it’s pretty easy to see how these activities can literally pull a family apart and drive us away from what is most important. Family time, having a close relationship with our spouse and children, and experiencing life to its fullest. These are typically the items at the top of everyone’s priority list but wind up falling to the bottom in the soccer mom’s reality lifestyle. That’s where the Anti-Soccer Mom can make a difference…

Take Back Control

All the chaos is not good for anyone in the family. With everyone going in different directions, it’s impossible to live in accordance with your values. So you need to take back control. While it may not be easy at first, you need to cut back the kids’ schedule. Likely they will be resistant, just be sure to explain to them why. When they begin to understand that you are doing this because you love them and actually want to be around them, you may be surprised what a positive impact that can make. Typically these kids are feeling pretty neglected and misunderstood anyway, but just don’t know it. By slowing life down a little they will be getting the type of attention they have been missing dearly.

Once you’ve cut back on their schedule, then you need to fill the time with activities in line with your values. Here’s a bullet list from the Anti-Soccer Mom:

~ Rearrange your life in order to have sit-down meals together.
~ Invest in some family board games like Cranium and make sure to carve out the time to play them.
~ Purchase a subscription to the USA Today, skim it, and debate current world topics at the dinner table. Make sure no opinion is “right”, rather discuss values and ethics as it pertains to the subject.
~ Turn off the TV.
~ Play together – there’s nothing better than heading to a park and tossing a football around.
~ Illustrate how to have a great marriage by living it.
~ Show them how to take care of their bodies by taking care of your own.

It’s what we do every day that teaches our children how to live and love. Make sure your actions and messages are congruent with what you believe and want to teach.

And don’t be afraid to be the Anti-Soccer Mom on your block. You might be surprised that they likely will envy your new and wonderful lifestyle.

Every home and school should have a first aid kit. Most parents don’t think of having a safe and natural head lice treatment ready at a moment’s notice. But first, before I tell you why your child is at risk, let’s begin by defining head lice.

There is a lot of social stigma around head lice infestation and finger pointing by other parents and school officials. Nobody wants to talk about head lice, but it seems every parent is faced with this burdensome problem each year. The more you know BEFORE an infestation happens will help your child get rid of head lice faster and safely.

1. About Head Lice

Head lice do not jump, fly, or swim. Lice are NOT contracted by unclean people. Children are infested by direct contact. Typically, lice prefer clean well-kept scalps and are most common in middle to upper class schoolchildren.

2. Causes of Head Lice

Head lice are spread by direct head-to-head contact with an infested person’s hair. Head Lice “walk” from one hair or head to another. Transfer by shared combs, hats and other hair accessories is not that common because head lice need to attach to a host.

3. Do Pets Transfer Head Lice?

Pets do not transfer head lice. Head lice and their eggs soon perish if separated from their human host. Never treat your pets for head lice.

4. What should be cleaned?

To prevent re-infestation wash and dry (with heat) all bedding [sheets, pillowcases and nightclothes] plus any towels or stuffed animals. Combs, brushes, hats and other hair accessories in contact with an infested person should be washed in hot water each day to dislodge any lice and nits.

5. Safe Natural Treatments

Do not expose your children to dangerous chemicals to rid them of head lice, nits and the eggs. Read the label. Most products kill head lice with pesticides and have warnings on the labels.

There are safe and effective treatments for getting rid of head lice for your kids. Unfortunately, most of them are not around the corner at your local health store. Typically, a lot of stores sell name brand products with harsh chemicals.

Be prepared and purchase a safe natural head lice treatment BEFORE your child comes home with head lice. It makes sense. You keep a first kit in your home for your child’s safety. Don’t wait and shop around for a couple of days while your child is suffering. You or another parent you know, maybe called into action and are faced with a head lice infestation. Quick, immediate action will stop any head lice infestation from spreading to the entire family, or at school. Purchase a safe, natural product today and be prepared.

Did you know that babies can develop high blood pressure? Many might think of this as uncommon but it really isn’t. When babies have high blood pressure it is usually because they are premature or have a kidney or a heart problem. When older children have high blood pressure it is usually a result of their family history.

As you might have noticed there is an increase in obesity in children today. This also increases their chances of developing high blood pressure, putting them at a greater risk of developing health problems. A great way to prevent this is to have your child’s blood pressure checked often as they get older.

Some other ways to help are by watching your child’s diet and making sure they get plenty of exercise. Some kids are not as active today what with video games and all. Try to get your child involved in activities on a regular basis from an early age. It will benefit them health wise as well as boost their self esteem later down the road.

Just like adults, it is easy to control your child’s blood pressure. Watch their diet, especially in the area of snack foods. Be sure they are getting the right nutrition and limit their intake of salt. Get them eating fresh fruits and vegetables. While many children don’t like vegetables, there are many ways to overcome this. You can spice up any recipe that involves vegetables.

Physical activity is a big key to any healthy lifestyle. Getting your child involved in physical activity while young will help ensure they stay active and healthy as they get older. Involve them in a sport of their choosing and take walks with them. Both of you will benefit from this.

If your family has a history of high blood pressure, be sure your children get routine check ups. This will help to ensure they do not develop high blood pressure and if they do, you can start controlling it. Remember stress can raise blood pressure and while children shouldn’t be stressed, many of them are.

Children deal with stress just like adults, just in different ways. Talk with your child and stay active in their life and what goes on. You want them to have a happy and healthy life and you can help them achieve that goal.

If you are unable to control your child’s blood pressure through their diet and exercise, you might have to turn to medication. Talk with your doctor and let them know what you have already tried. Sometimes this is not enough alone, but with medication, you can help control it.

Try to exercise with your child every day. Exercising alone sometimes is harder for children and adults alike. You can get involved with your child this way and it will benefit both of you.

Talk with your teenager about not smoking and drinking. These both cause high blood pressure and once they know the risks they are less likely to try them. Do not think your child is immune from developing any health problems along with high blood pressure.

Remember that blood pressure increases with age until you are around fifty. If you get a head start on watching yours and your child’s at an early age, you will both benefit very well in the end.

“Primary (baby) teeth serve important functions for your child’s dental health. They help your child to eat and speak, and they serve as space holders in your child’s mouth to ensure that permanent teeth grow in straight. They also are important for the jawbone and mouth muscles to develop normally.

Sometimes a child’s baby tooth comes out too soon. For example, it may be lost due to an injury or accident, or it may need to be removed due to decay. Problems can develop if the space from the missing tooth does not remain open. The neighboring teeth may crowd out the space where the permanent tooth should come in, and other teeth may grow in crooked. To help prevent future problems and avoid expensive orthodontic treatment, we may place a space maintainer.

How a space maintainer is made?

A space maintainer is a dental appliance that fits into the space where a primary tooth (particularly a molar) is missing. It may be made of metal, plastic, or resin materials, and it is created specifically for your child’s mouth.

In some types of space maintainers, a band or crown is fitted directly over one of the adjacent teeth. A wire loop or splint, braced against the adjacent tooth, is custom-crafted to hold the space open. In other types of space maintainers, a set of bands and wires are fitted into the arch of your child’s mouth.

Some types of space maintainers are removable, while others are bonded in place. Some leave a visible open space, while others may have a realistic-looking tooth to cover the space. We will discuss with you the available options that best fit your child’s dental situation.

It may take a couple of appointments to fit your child for a space maintainer. During the first visit, we take an impression of your child’s mouth. This is used to create a precise model, so that the space maintainer can be created individually. During the next visit, we place the space maintainer and check that it fits properly.

How to care for your child’s space maintainer?

Space maintainers are very small and inconspicuous. Although your child may be conscious of the space maintainer at first, after a couple of days, the mouth should feel normal.

To protect the space maintainer, remind your child to:

    (1)	Avoid chewing gum, sticky foods, or hard foods and ice.
(2)	Avoid pushing or pulling on the space maintainer with the tongue or fingers.
(3)	Keep the area clean (just like the rest of the teeth) with regular brushing and flossing.

When your child comes in for regular checkups, we will examine the space maintainer to ensure that it still fits properly and that the area is clean. We will also monitor the emerging permanent tooth, so that when the time comes, we can remove the space maintainer.”

<
Hearing loss does not only affect people approaching old age. It is also prevalent in children. In fact, hearing loss is being detected in children at a younger age than ever before.

Type of hearing loss

The most common type of hearing loss among children is called sensorineural which occurs due to damage of the inner ear. The damage can be caused by an infection, injury or most commonly, through exposure to loud noise. This type of damage cannot be repaired.

While sensorineural hearing loss does not permanently improve, it also does not get any worse. It involves a lowering in the ability to hear soft sounds, to hear clearly and can affect how well you understand speech. Typically, this type of hearing loss can be improved through the use of a hearing aid. Other types of hearing loss are conductive and mixed. Conductive hearing loss is when sounds are not conducted to the inner ear properly and can often be corrected with surgery. Mixed hearing loss involves both sensorineural and conductive. A hearing professional can assess the type and degree of hearing loss your child has.

What causes hearing loss in children

Most types of hearing loss is not genetic but is noise-induced, brought on through outside noise that is too loud. There are noises that you have no control over and then there are noises that you create yourself.

Loud music, particularly music played directly into the ear via earbuds, is one way that kids are getting exposed to noise that can damage the ears. A recent study in Australia found that children as young as three have shown signs of permanent hearing loss due to listening to loud music. Do you know that listening to music that is too loud for more than 5 to 10 minutes can produce hearing damage? Shocking but true.

Another similar cause of hearing loss is playing musical instruments too loudly. It is found that playing and practicing in a school band or orchestra can actually cause hearing loss. This is true when the music is practiced in an enclosed area. The National Association for Music Education (MENC) even issued a statement that educators need to recognize music as a cause of noise-induced hearing loss.

What can be done

The most important thing you can do as a parent is to become aware of the hazards of noise-induced hearing loss. Familiarize yourself with the causes of hearing loss and teach your children to take preventative measures.

First, try to ensure that you enforce strict volume guidelines on things such as iPod and other listening devices. Listen to the device yourself to determine what you feel are safe volume levels.

Get your children to use earplugs. Just like the helmet helps keep a child safe and protected when riding a bicycle, earplugs can help keep ears safe from loud noises. Ensure that your child wears the earplugs when practicing in the band or even when mowing the lawn.

The lesson here is to be forewarned. Use precautions and common sense to set limits for children. Teach them the importance of taking care of their hearing and help them understand when noise levels are too loud.

“Many parents struggle with solutions to put their child on the fast track to success, and one such solution is not usually far from home. It is your local martial arts school.

How will martial arts change your child’s life? The difference could be, as simple as, keeping your child away from peer pressure that leads to drug abuse. Although, the answer is much deeper, martial arts will give any child the tools necessary to become a success in life.

Goal setting skills (a major component in martial arts training) make a huge difference in anyone’s life. By making accomplishments, your child develops a positive self-image. This “positive self visualization” develops academic and athletic success.

Children want structure, and they crave discipline. This makes them feel secure in family, school, and public settings. Within their martial arts training, they find structure, discipline, and the ability to discipline themselves.

Social skills, (like good manners), eye contact, and public speaking, are developed in each lesson. As your child advances through the ranks, there may be more opportunities with the “Leadership Team” or the “Demonstration Team.”
Some martial arts schools have these “elite teams” for children to develop leadership, and inner confidence, skills.

Leadership Team members learn how to develop the skills necessary to lead a group. Demonstration Team members learn about showmanship, humility, and the courage to perform in a variety of public settings. These elite teams prepare children for life’s pressures, and give them experience, at learning valuable skills.

Let’s face it – we live in a time of video games, Internet, cable TV, and fast food that tastes good. Globally, Type II Diabetes is on the rise in children due to inactivity, high calorie diet, lifestyles, physical education cut backs, and lack of time.

Martial arts gives children a positive way to burn calories, and socialize with quality friends, in a safe setting. It also keeps them away from the television.

Find a martial arts center that prides itself on the positive development of its clients. We have many success stories – from academic achievements, to losing pounds of unwanted fat. If you want to make a positive change in your life, or that of a loved one, your local martial arts studio is always there to help.”
